We went through the issues several years ago for competitions on the Virgin

Records web sites. Some things to watch out for are:


Prize draws are considered gambling, therefore are subject to morality

laws, whereas competitions have fewer restrictions.


Territorial issues are important. You can't feasibly run a true global

competition/prize draw - the legal costs involved in finding out local law

for each country would be vast.


You have a duty to make the rules clear, publish the details of the

promoter, and make sure the promoter and/or the agency handling the entries

is on the Data Protection registry and understands their duties there.


Having said all that, these are all areas where the DPP isn't known to be

particularly proactive. And a test of skill might be..."Billie's first

single was called 'Because We Want To'. What was Billie's first single

called?"
