That's a very interesting point, Steve. On the one hand, as a community
member, what I say is 'cost-free' to the other members of the community, and
therefore the need for MY WORDS to be attached to a sponsorship message is
surprising.
On the other hand, perhaps what we don't appreciate is that Sam puts a lot
of resources (his time, his energy, a server, bandwidth) into the community.
He doesn't *own* it, but without him and his guiding presence it wouldn't
exist. For example, he's just upgraded the performance of the list. We
know he reads the postings and filters the 'how do I unsubscribe from this
list' to a more useful place. If we made the same 'investment' we would
'own' the list; maybe at some point someone else will 'own' it.
My point as a sponsor is that I want to see UKNM continue. I personally
have a stake in Sam continuing to run the community, and took action by
proposing that Excite sponsor it, in what we both hoped would be a
relatively non-intrusive fashion.
I have a hard time with the idea that people don't want to see Sam rewarded
for his work -- work that is much in excess of what any other community
member is doing. Maybe when the sponsorship comes up for renewal we should
have a community whip-round and see how useful that is.
