You doubts are well founded. Software such as WPG is used by many people who
want a low cost, low overhead approach to SEO. The results can sometimes be
encouraging but in sectors which are highly competitive (all most all now!)
you cannot rely on this approach alone. The reporting does not cover UK or
European versions of engines and the SEs change ranking methodology so
frequently you need to really understand how each engine works and why some
are more volatile than others.

Additionally the recent changes in Yahoo, Looksmart and Inktomi (which feeds
many engines) moving to paid for listings cannot be catered for using
software, someone has to keep track of this.

WPG can help with page analysis and general reporting but in our experience
can't beat (unfortunately laborious) manual page optimisation.
