Subject: RE: UKNM: are .com domains necessary for startups?

Got to have the .com - I know of at least one start up B2C that didn't have
the .com and was losing at least 10% of its traffic to people just guessing
or remembering wrong (they worked it out from the traffic stats on the
previously dormant .com before you ask).

and the consequence was a very expensive rebranding exercise.

Once you've got the .com, register a trade mark, which is invaluable in
reclaiming domain names from opportunists who go out registering every other
dot once your business takes off.

I know this was covered a while ago, but...

is there an advantage or disadvantage to having only a .co.uk or .net domain
name without the .com?

As dot coms have become established, more being registered daily, it's
becoming nearly impossible to come up with a snappy, memorable domain name.

I believe, ideally you should have a .com, .co.uk and a .net - but does it
really matter?

What does everyone think?
