Having done 9 years at University (2 degrees and 3 years then full 

time research) - all I'd say is that whilst I gained a load of excellent 

experience,  I also managed make myself fairly unemployable in 

the career I was in (no money or future in academia and industry 

just assumes once an academic always an academic), learnt to 

write a 400 page book which no one has read (and I'm not 

surprised) - and became one of the many bitter university 

employees with low wages, poor career structure, lack of funding, 

trying to offset innovative research vs mundane work to justify costs 

to business and government funders....


In some ways I think having my uni. background has been a 

millstone - definitely in the latter years of my science career - so in 

that sense I wish I'd dropped out earlier (and I guess my Loquax 

partner would concur with that from her own experiences).


The good thing out of all this is there's no one in the .com side of 

things I deal with now who wants to know about phenols and their 

role in oil/water interactions (although if you're interested....)
