I think the general thing is that its only worth it if you make many
repeat purchases. That's why Tesco, Sainsburys etc have been so
successful with their loyalty cards, since we all have to buy food all
the time.

On the other hand credit card loyalty points are completely useless -
hence the success of cash back cards from Alliance&Leicester, Amex Blue
and now Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.

Loyalty on the net is another level - sites must drive loyalty to
generate repeat visits and repeat purchases. How this is done is not
yet clear. Maybe loyalty should be in the form of 'cash back' or 'money
off' idea.
