The women dared to dream

Susan Payne

Susan is the CEO of EmVest, which was previously part of Emergent Asset Management, where Susan was CEO and she spun out Emvest when she exited the investment group. Payne last year sold her stake in EAM, an emerging markets private equity investment company she founded in 1997, to buyout its Africa-focused EmVest platform. The buyout also included the Emergent African Land Fund.

Susan has worked in the emerging markets on both the sell and buy side for over 20 years. After having been called to the Bar in Canada in 1985, Susan joined JP Morgan in 1986, where she was Head of Emerging Markets Sales, Europe. In 1993, Susan joined Goldman Sachs International as an Executive Director and Head of Emerging Markets Debt Sales and Trading, Europe. In 1997, Susan founded Emergent Asset Management Limited, an award–winning, alternative investment firm based in the UK, where Susan managed EM portfolios, as well as focusing on developing the firm’s Real Assets division in Africa through Emergent's "Pro Alia Management" and EmVest Asset Management and Agri Corp. EmVest currently manages an agri fund involving growing, processing and distributing various commodities across 5 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

EmVest's head office is based in Pretoria, South Africa. In 2006 Susan was awarded a Shell UK Women of the Future Award. Susan is on the Board of MyC4, a microfinance business focused on ending poverty in Africa, and is a Patron of the Africa-focused charity Medical Aid Films. She is also Head of the UK Chapter of 85 Broads, the largest professional women’s network in the world.

Sarah Curran

Sarah Curran is the founder and CEO of online clothing retail empire My-wardrobe.com.

My-wardrobe.com is a fast-growing online fashion retailer. Specialising in “accessible luxury” designer brands for men and women, my-wardrobe offers a unique range of current-season fashion from the likes of Polo Ralph Lauren, Anya Hindmarch, Mulberry, D&G, 3.1 Phillip Lim and By Malene Birger. With an experienced buying team, class-leading customer service, and innovations such as click-to-buy video content and the award-winning “my-tv”, my-wardrobe has become one of the UK’s most talked-about online shopping destinations.

My Wardrobe has received a GBP6m funding from Balderton Capital.

Sales have nearly doubled every year since Curran launched My-wardrobe just over five years ago and the company is now stepping up expansion abroad. While the British high street struggles in the face of the economic downturn, My-wardrobe saw 68% sales growth in the first half of this year. Sales doubled in the 12 months to May after Curran introduced more upmarket brands such as Missoni and Phillip Lim. More than 900,000 shoppers visit the site each month to view collections from 180 designers, spending an average of £260.Curran points to 100 per cent sales growth year on year as testament to the "massive global potential" of the brand and a coveted Drapers Best Customer Experience award in 2010 shows that investment in back-end technology is paying off.
