Hi Kris.

This is what masks are for -- they work only on the layer imediately below.
Insert a layer above the curve and set its layer property to mask (click
on the square to the right of the layer name to do this). The rest of the
work is similar to what you described, except that the solid-filled area
that defines the mask will _reveal_ rather than _conceal_ the content on
the layer below. Note that the mask is defined by a filled area and that
alpha and gradient aspects to the fill are ignored.
