Hiya Craig,
So far, in my studies, I have found two things that
might eliminate
frames altogether and still keep the site
constantly updated.
1: Would be to use Flash generator. This is a server
side application
that constantly updates the swf. I havent
thoroughly investigated it yet myself.
2: Would be to use Colin M's "hidden frame" routine
to call up a pop up
window which holds traditional
HTML to update on the spot. the hidden frame routine
works around error
problems since IE doesnt
support "live connect" when using buttons in Flash.
I come more from a animation, illustration background.
I try to stay
away from CGI, JS, FS command, java, and
DHTM code when designing interactive websites. The
few traditional
websites Ive designed I try to keep it
very simple, fast loading and conceptually pleasing.
If it needs to be
interactive and I can sell the plug-in,
there are simpler ways to design the site while keeping
it very
interactive and loading quick. This is why Flash and
its vector format
interest me.
Calling frames takes time to load each HTML doc. Simply
using Flash3 and
"load movie" is much quicker.
Hassle is, you named it, -constantly updating-.
I would read up more on Flash's generator.
