Hal,

Assuming that your crayons are named "crayon1", "crayon2", etc... Try this
on the "off" button (in the frame labeled "off"):

On (Press)
Begin Tell Target ("/"&/:prevCrayon)
Go to and Stop ("off")
End Tell Target
Set Variable: "/:prevCrayon" = _name
Go to and Stop ("on")
End On

On the "on" button/frame you could just have the following...

On (Press)
Go to and Stop ("off")
End On
