Depends what the deal was. Many if not most freelancers do NOT provide
source code, or charge quite a bit extra for it. The presumption in USA
case law is that freelance work results in a license for usage of the
product, not in a transfer of ownership of the product. See gag.org
(Graphic Artists' Guild) for lots of great information about these and
other considerations. Since many clients are not savvy about this, it's
essential to include the terms in a written contract or at least a memo. A
contract will tend to help protect you legally. A memo will tend to help
preserve good client relations.
