Actually, this has recently been discussed on list quite a bit. There
seems to be a variety of ideas about it, mostly negative. Some folks
find the plus side being the organizational aspect of using scenes.
However, the fla size is the only thing affected, not the swf's.

Here's an old post:

When your FLA file gets compressed into an SWF file, all of your scenes get
flattened into one layer and one timeline. Therefore, tell targets often
don't work, and targeting a frame number in another scene will never work
since the frame numbers change upon export.

In the past I never used scenes, but I recently took on a client who had a
template that they insisted I use that is based on scenes. The Flash is
extremely linear, so it doesn't have a big impact on the functionality.
However if you are building a dynamic, non-linear site, scenes are
definitely not the way to go; IMO.
