A specific answer:

Runs fine on NT 4 server/NT 4 workstation/Win95/Win98 under both IE4 and
IE5. Interface is a bit non-intuitive. I thought it was broken for a second.

Obvious solution: Use Wintel machines and IE 5 for everything! For casual
and home use, try Win98. It works okay. Most of the time. For industrial
strength applications, use NT, it works better. More of the time. Except for
what it doesn't work with at all. Which is no big deal: just old 16 bit
stuff, a few miscellaneous drivers, and DirectX 4, 5, or 6. You can throw
away the 16 bit garbage and buy new 32 bit garbage direct from Redmond. You
don't need those drivers, either. Just get better hardware. Maybe from
Redmond. And if you wait just a bit longer, DirectX will be there too. From
Redmond, of course.

NT, then for you and me,
NT is better than anything free,
NT is happy, NT is neat,
NT on your desktop, throw your Mac on the street.
NT is best, NT is a thrill
So take all your money, and send it to Bill
NT!!!

Seriously, though, I gotta take exception to Nigel's statement:
"Internet Explorer is as browsers go a very non standard product".
Different, maybe. Unique, perhaps. Non-standard? On Wintel machines, no. And
what else is there anyway (see paragraph 2 above)?

Compare feature by feature W3C specifications, recommendations, working
drafts, and the rest. IE is closer to implementing all of it per standards
adopted and proposed than any other browser out there. Netscape is way off
in the ozone in terms of their dhtml through <layer>, their implementation
of CSS (weak) and the way they tie it into Javascript (non-standard), and
their DOM (incomplete and somewhat non-standard).

Guys and gals, let's all get with the program here: one browser, one O/S,
one world under Bill with total compatibility for all. What more could you
ask for?
