All of the above might be very true, but any tool is what users make of
it, and Flash is no exception.
I use Flash for web dev. true but not exclusively, and saying it just
good for using with a browser is not understanding all it's potential.
Before going into Flash usage for CD first some other areas :
Through ActiveX Flash is a great way to build interactive buttons and
other hot things in Windows based apps enabling innovative program
interfaces.
What can be done with ActiveX can be also done in a OS independent way
with the Flash Java API. Java, Swing and Flash are a real hot combo for
gui building even considering we have to do with Flash2 only.

Now for Dave's question. I wouldn't put it as a Flash vs. Director but
more as Flash or Director.
Let's take an example or two.
First case : Client, a big car maker, requests a promo CD for their
company. This will be a one time CD and you have 3 months to produce it.
Contents are mostly images and video with text.
What do you use ? Director no doubt. Version 6 in my case, I was one of
the smart people that didn't switch to 6.5 ;).
Second case : Client, a publisher, wants to start including in one of
it's monthly magazines a CD. Content is mostly image and text and you
have about two weeks to produce each CD. Also as they don't want to
raise the cover price client is working on a shorter budget.
So what do you do here ? Would you use Director ? Would it be cost
effective for you to do so ? Would it be time effective to do so ?
This is a case where I would not use Director but Flash. Final costs are
lower, margins are higher, client pays less, in the end everybody is
happy.
Of course my opinions are arguable but as a developer I know where the
money comes from and using Flash only for web dev. would be stupid.
