Ok, so this "need a flashmaster" guy is a total lamer. Any ideas why this
sort of thing happens in the art/multimedia field more than anywhere else?
Heck, my brother and 2 of my friends (actually my only friends, hehe) are
all techs. Nobody has ever approached them and said, "hey, come over to my
office and fix my pc's for about 20 hours. If you fix them better than
anyone else I might hire you. In any case it will be a great learning
experience." Nobody would take that seriously. Yet, somehow in the art
industry that sort of thing is floating around all over the place..... and
it works. Morover, even intelligent people who avoid that sort of thing are
at least tempted when they're first starting out. Ok, I've got a
confession to make. When I was getting my first job the guy says to me....
"hey, I don't have a lot of money, but I can give you enough exposure you'll
never have to look for work again." So I'm thinking.... SHAZAM!!!!! Of
course, the only work It ever attracted was for a rinky dink $130 site and
all the big guy ever paid me was $500. I don't want to get into specifics
but that was NOT a good deal. If I ever hear that line again I'm going to
start punching and not stop until the police pull me off the guy, hehe. I
guess the closest I ever came to doing something stupid like that a second
time was my recent freebie "demo." However.... that was another first and
last.
I already know about the ever popular... "I'll make you a superstar!" and
the "let me see what you can do kid" ..... so...... Any other common
pitfalls I oughta be watching out for?
Sincerely,
Al Rosetti
