Hi Al
The reason artists get this "I can't pay much but I'll make you a star"
bit applies to all the arts. Actors, painters, illustrators, graphic
designers, musicians are all subject to this baloney. I have always
thought that were several reasons why this is so.
1. Because everybody knows that artists love what they do and would
probably do it no matter what.
This may be partly true, but save the freebies for community service
when the urge is overwhelming.
2. Because creative people are not businessmen and are therefore fair
game.
It is therefore important to be business-like and that means do the job
as spec'ed and on time and be sure to listen to what the client wants
and expects, and get it all written down and signed before you start.
3. Because "my cousin's boy, Harry, is a great little artist and he's
only 14. It can't be that hard."
There is nothing anyone can do except tell him to call Harry.;>
4. I don't have a computer and all those programs like you do, and
besides I'm just too busy with "real work" right now.
Giggling is the appropriate response here.
5. Because the main place that everybody remembers doing art work (or
singing or dancing or any of the other arts) was in Kindergarten. So
artists are children and not really responsible adults who should be
paid.
If they think that they wouldn't know or see the difference between
great and awful. Of course it all depends on how much you enjoy cranial
contact with brick walls.
If after a conversation with a prospective client I detect any of the
above points of view, I make polite excuses and run for the nearest
exit.
I seem to have gone on a lot longer than I'd intended. Sorry to bend
everyones e-ear. ;>
