OK, I see where you're coming from.
I put the problem sound in its own MC, and I've had no problems in the last
few minutes.
The rest of the file is behaving. I'll leave it be until something happens.
Like they say: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'd still love for someone over at MM to tell me why what was happening was
happening, especially when it's not happening anywhere else in the file, nor
had it happened to me before.
