Or the experience of anyone who uses the Internet at an office
with a fat pipe to the Internet??? A higher bandwidth connection
than a modem from home will be great, but it's hardly something
The World Has Never Seen, as some people are apparently
expecting.

I have a 10 Mbps connection from my PC at work to the Internet. The
next hop after that is a 2 Mbps link shared among a bunch of people
in the office, and from there all of the connections - of which it generally
takes anywhere from 5-20 to reach the site I'm looking at - are of various
sizes, and shared between various numbers of people.

There are a fair number of people in the corporate world who have very
similar setups. Anyone who is wondering what the miraculous world
of fat pipes to your ISP are like, and what kind of wondrous content
it enables, should try browsing the Net from an office LAN. Same
stuff. Usually (but not always) faster than from home. As more people
get on, it slows down. If more home users move their bottleneck from
the PC <-> ISP link to someplace upstream, the Net will become much
slower than it now is for office users, even if content remains the
same size.
