My understanding of 'viral marketing' also includes anything that gets sent
round the office world via email.
I personally have a stunning collection of shite from all corners of the
world, including the hilarious, slick, inane, gross etc. etc. You all know
what I'm talking about, the stuff we all love and love to hate cos it costs
industry billions of squillions a year in work time wasted.
Now - if you send out a creative product via email (or stick it on the web)
that is so attractive that everyone in everyone's contacts list receives it
directly, it comes from a friend, *gets your full attention* for a few
moments or more, and entertains in some way = Holy Grail
... it could promote a product or service directly or indirectly. Dats viral
marketing too.
If anyone wants a selection of say half a dozen examples, email me and I'll
post em up somewhere.. :)

I think its those organise a scheme that encourages people to get their
friends to join in (i.e. that Virgin Holiday competiton from a while back).

into the system so that we can spam them on some dubious pretext).
Of course there are good examples and bad examples. I quite like Amazon's
refer a friend scheme (6 vouchers attest to that) and virgin's cinema ticket
was useful (until I discovered that it wasn't valid in central London) but I
rarely see the point of having to enter friend's email addresses into the
system to enter a competition.
Mind you, considering what we can do via babyhippo (up and running on Monday
folks, probably with outlook synchronisation as well) I suppose we would
have to be counted as such an agency and we will have a neat viralish
competition scheme in the near future.
Oh and I'm down in Londoni, Tuesday- Wednesday if anyone wants a run
through.
