PNG is actually 2 formats.

 8 bit allows indexed color and color reduction like GIF.

24 bit allows alpha channels but not indexing.


I think you were expecting a 24 bit image to utilize the indexed color which it can

not.

If color reduction (256 colors or less) provides an acceptable picture then you

should use 8 bit output.

This is especially important since adding transparency to a 24 bit PNG actually

makes it a 32 bit image (8 bits for the alpha channel) and increases its size,

whereas a transparent indexed color costs almost nothing for an 8 bit PNG image.
