Subject: Re: FLASH: Director with Flash 4 Question

Version stuff here: Flash 4 work will play in the Director 7.02 authoring
application and its Projectors. It will also play in the Shockwave 7.02
Player, which is now in beta.

Rephrased: If authoring in D702, and delivering to browsers, then please be
sure to consider whether you'll be using SW700 or SW702 features. Different
sites will migrate to different versions at different times.

Context: Director 7 came out when Flash 3 was available, but before Flash 4
did. That's why Director 7.00 and Shockwave 7.00 support SWF3 files.
Support for SWF4 was added in the D702 updater. SW702 is now in developer
beta, and will be released simultaneously with the upcoming ShockMachine
and the new shockwave.com site.
(For more info on all of this, please see
http://www.shockwave.com/devroom/ .)

Taking a jump out from the specific to the general, if you'll be putting a
Flash file inside Shockwave and want to use streaming MP3-style audio, then
use SWA... it's been around for 'way longer than anyone has heard of
".MP3", and it supports cuepoints, progress testing, audio-blending, and
more.

Rephrased, if you'll be creating Flash files for use in Shockwave, then
they're not subject to the same constraints as browser-based delivery. You
can pass messages between the two easily. It's easy to integrate various
media sources. You have the full scripting language to back it up. Creating
SWFs for browsers can be slightly more constraining than creating SWFs for
Shockwave.

Summary: Shockwave 7.02 will be the first version arriving after Flash 4 is
finalized. If you're creating Flash-for-Shockwave, then please consider the
balance between the larger installed base, and the larger feature set,
thanks.
