kludge.

If you go the js route, the code on this page looks like it might be
useful: http://javascript.internet.com/navigation/dynamic-frameset.html
(not exactly what you're doing, but it has the code for reading/doing
something with a passed variable).

Would love to see the code you finally come up with.
