Blank Keyframes are Empty circles where you would see no image from the
previous frame.
Empty frames are just dots and reflect the contents of the last
keyframe.

If you indeed have empty frames and not blank keyframes following your
first frame, try the following. Hide all other layers and then play it
if it plays with the background throughout then there is nothing wrong
with that layer and you have something covering it up on a higher
layer. Issolate the layer causing the problem and find what is covering
up your background.
