Hi John (or are you Mary?),

No offense, but this sounds as if it must be something you're overlooking,
such as right-justification of text or having edited the center of the
symbol. When you recreated this in other fonts, did you start from scratch
or just change the font in the existing symbol? Have you tried cutting and
pasting frames to see if it replicates the problem? Have you copied the
frames to a blank .fla?

Weird stuff like this can be pretty elusive, and sometimes it just takes a
fresh set of eyes to find it. Please put the .fla on a server somewhere so
we can have a look if possible.
