I think the problem is that MM never intended getURL to be
used for mailto... I think they intended it for web pages. Mailto
works simply because mailto is supported by browsers
instead of HTTP, and getURL just passes the mailto like it was
a URL. So the use of mailto is really just a hack and a
work-around, and we shouldn't expect a lot from it... That's my
best guess anyway.

thing? It _is_ kinda silly and convoluted to have to open an application you
don't need to open an application to get things done. (Apple Data Detectors
will open your email client directly, and so will most other Internet
Config aware applications. There must be similar mechanism on the Windows
side, no?
