That clarifies things.

However strategic investments by NTT is a strong sign that G3 license owners
like the advances made by NTT with iMode in Japan... and as such does this
not signal the end of WAP as it is today?

It would make sense as user experience, broader band, "data network"
connectivity would be a waste on WAP.

Quite and interesting challenge facing W3 is making the mark-up language
compatible with other internet channels... One would assume HTML is too
heavy, WML is incompatible... How does consensus come about with so many
network operators and infrastructure and handset manufacturers in Europe
jockeying for position... sounds like a tough challenge to me.

Speculative and interesting issue, this one. Bottom line, we (presumably)
won't see iMode as such over here.

NTT owns DoCoMo, iMode is a product. Partial ownership so far in KPN mobile,
Hutchinson 3G UK Holdings, Verio (US ISP), SK Telekom (Korea), all minority
stakes. Rumours include Optus (AUS, with C&W/ NTL), NZ Telecom and AOL
Japan. Orange is now owned by France Telecom (I think)

DoCoMo does not have the funds to buy majorities as NTT will not float it or
issue bonds or further equity - hence cash is the only source. This dilutes
the leverage they have (minorities) and endangers their technical and
business models, but they have a lot of experience in - user experience!.
You are correct about the strategic investments.

The weakness of the system is periodically proven as the one and only (!)
server keeps crashing , 5 hours last time.

hope this helps
