IMO, our relationship with online shopping follows a similar pattern to
other high-tech apparitions, (such as CD-ROMs and, yet to come, WAP) which
is hype -> disappointment -> reality.

In the end, two things happen: a) 'bad' sites either die or adjust (very
difficult with no redemption time!) and b) users readjust, see right through
the hype and stick to credible merchants/ service providers etc. who
actually deliver. A concept needs to be spot on right from the start, even
more in the online world! After all, online shops cater for a selective,
educated and connected public.

On the note of consumer behaviour, it would seem that in Germany (where I
grew up) shopping is much more price-driven than in the UK. I usually shop
online for price, and then convenience; I must admit, though, that Rod's
experience with buy.com would put me off for all time!

What do you think ?

Feel free to "diss" - should one add "bro'" to that :o)

It'll never happen, but I hope that 2000 is the year that

(a) the "over-hyped" finally start to deliver and

(b) the hype merchants become more educated and

(c) the press, city and public learn to see what is purely "all hype but no
trousers"

I wouldn't say the UK web industry (well represented on UKNM, BTW) had been
wowed by Lastminute.com, but all in (c) above seemed capable of swallowing
anything that they heard.

The list of disappointing web sites and Internet companies that don't
deliver on the hype in the UK is staggering and has only recently started
to receive some bad press and TV coverage.

Equally the list of well designed, managed, promoted and useful sites
continues to grow. As for a standard bearer, I think there has yet to be a
site in any country that deserves to be seen as head and shoulders above
all others.
