Football sponsorship can work fabulously in a company's favour - I was doing
PR for Sybase (a database company) when they were sponsoring the World Cup
in 1998. David Beckham fortuitously (for us, not him) chose to kick Diego
Simeone right in front of the Sybase board, and infamously got sent off.
Result: mass international newspaper/broadcast coverage of Beckham in
red-card action with large-as-life SYBASE right behind him.

Having said that, I wouldn't ever have rated Sybase's brand-recognition very
highly outside of the IT departments of big merchant banks. Still, they
took me to the Germany-Croatia match, nice people that they are :-)
