i'm floating a big paragraph of the same two letters repeated over and over
across a page in a tweened animation. flash is running extremely slow, can i
change the letters to a graphic like in illustrator? what's the trick to
making that big block of letters (f&p) a small workable graphic without
slowing flash down so much?

Only is you set movie export parameter to Flash3 stype movie, in which case
you lose any features unique to version 4.

Whatever size preserves a 1:1 display ratio for the jpg's. This means your
screensaver will be a fixed size. It may be okay to reduce them in display
size, however, so if you want to use a fullscreen projector my advice would
be to design for 1024x768. What you don't want is to have the jpg displayed
at a larger size than the original.

IE 4.5 for Mac has known problems with Load Movie. I see you're on a Mac,
so this could be your problem. Poast the URL if you'd like us PC-types to

It all has to do with complexity of the image. Converting to a non-symbol
(graphic) will not reduce the number of curves and will lose the benefit of
fonts being stored as letter symbols in Flash. Be sure to use a simple font
such as Arial or Verdana. Avoid using alpha effects on the text. You could
experiment with toggling high quality off while the text is moving quickly,
then toggling it back on when the text slows down enough to read. The
bottom line, however, is that large blocks of text are often too complex to
tween quickly and smoothly. Remember that visual effects don't always have
to be super-realistic; often you can leave out details and get the same
visual effect.

This is the first time I post in this group. Let me introduce myself: I'm
pi, I live in the Netherlands. Currently I'm working on my first flash
project. At the moment I'm quite stuck with FSscripts, probably because I
don't know a lot about javascript.

But that's not what I want to bother you with. What I'd like to know is
whether there are any statistics yet on how many people upgraded from flash3
plugin to flash4 plugin? I know it's a bit soon, but I'm very curious about
this...

no, it should be possible.

a few guesses, without seeing the source file...

> Set Variable: "m" = "2"
> Loop While (m <= param_num)
> Set Variable: "new" = GetProperty (/clip1, Eval("param" & m ))
1) try putting "/clip1" in quotation marks.
2) make sure the value of the variable is set to expression (change the
little abc button to two lines "=")

> Set Variable: "m" = "m+1"
3) here as well, make sure the value of the variable is set to expression
(change the little abc button to two lines "="). it looks like it's set to
string here because "m+1" is quoted. quotes denote a string literal in
actionscript. look for that if you're having problems. and use the trace
action to track the value of variables to be sure they're what you expect.

Why not simply save out your movie as a Flash 3 style movie and see what is
"taken out" of it?

That should be a viable option.

Subject: Re: FLASH: Screensaver Size

Hi Eric,

The FLA size does not really matter while you are working on it. What
matters is when you export it as an SWF. When you create a Flash site, you
need to make sure the file size is the smallest but since you are
distributing the screen saver, it will be stored on the users computer, so
the size is not really an issue. Keep it under 1mb so the end result will be
less than 1.4mb so it can keep onto a floppy disk..

What you will find though with using large sized JPGs is that the animation
will be slow. Apart from that, there is no real problem with file size. But
I guess the smaller you can get the SWF, the faster the download of the
screen saver. To get a better idea on how to use JPG's in a screensaver look
at Eye4u Screensaver, it's fast and runs smoothly.

We hope this helps/

Yes, in most cases Flash 4 sites will display with Flash 3 plugins.

If you go to my Get Properties tutorial the Bird animation is done as a
Flash 4 file.
If you go there with a Flash 4 browser you should see the buttons and
the bird is rotating. If you go there with a Flash 3 plugin you will see
the Bird but it won't be rotating and by an internal Flash 3/4 detection
scheme you will see a text button that says it doedn't work with Flash 3
and if you click it you will go to Macromedia's plugin upgrade page. All
of this is in a single Flash 4 .swf file.
http://www.FlashBible.com/Members/Actionscript/GetProperties.htm

If anyone has poblems with the detection on this page please let me know
asap. I have gone through many versions of this detection script and I
think it is finally working correctly foe all browsers. So please test
it and let me know. If it passes final testing it will be available for
everyone's use. It is very easy to add to any F4 FLA, just create a new
layer, copy one frame and Label your Flash 3 an 4 content frames.

Please, don't post links publicly to sites with Flash tools that are
used primarily by people stealing graphics and other details from Flash
files. Though these utilities can be used by the owner of a file, most
people who use these tools do so to open files and extract info in files
without the permisssion of the owner.

But, please send a person in need a personal email with the link(s).

Even, with the tools there is often little you can recover from an FLA.
But they can and do make it possible to save some of your objects.

Hey All,

I'm brand spanking new to this list. I have a question that I
cannot find the answer for and I have looked. I'm hoping one of
you Flash Gurus have the answer.

Our site uses flash animations. However, after a couple times of
flash movies playing in Internet Explorer 4 and now 5 too they
just stop showing up. This is a really problem because at one
point out navigation was a flash movie.

This actually happens with all flash movies. We cannot even view
the Macromedia Site from Internet Explorer 4 or 5. Our we missing
something simple? Has anyone else run into this?

P.S. Yes, we have all the necessary plug-ins. They did play now
they've stopped. Hmmmm? Curious.

Thanks for all or any help.

Subject: FLASH: Really easy question about buttons

When I roll over a button, I want the state of the button to change AND I
also want another image to change.

Currently I have three buttons set up. There is a separate image that is
the default image.

When I roll over button_1 I want Image_1 to replace the default button,
etc.

I tried to do the following:
four frames in the movie
first frame contains keyframes for buttons and the default image
second fram contains a keyframe for image_1
third frame contains a keyframe for image_2
fourth frame contains a keyframe for image_3

I have an action on each of the button's rollover state to "go to and
stop" on the appropriate frame. This didn't work. I also tried to have
the action on the down and hit states and that didn't work either.

Can someone help me out? I'm probably over looking something really
obvious.
Thanks.

Could it possibly be that some people have more than one browser, have
to reinstall Flash after computer problems such as crashes, or upgrade
to newer versions of Flash? Just a though :-)

> WOW... People have Flash and they aren't even on the Internet yet!
Flash comes preinstalled not only with browsers but with Operating
Systems so people often have Flash before they go on the Web.

Hi James,

You need to investigate invisible buttons, movie clips and tell target.

Vincent,

Yes statistics are a bit difficult to grasp for those that have little
knowledge of what they are about. The 161.000.000 value refers to all
players served. I downloaded more than once from Macromedia so I've
contributed my share to this value but that does not clone me, I'm still
only one. The same goes for every other download. You could do this,
161.000.000 downloaded, circa 76% surfers are flash/shock enabled,
130.000.000 surfers. 76% of 130.000.000 is 98.800.000. Dividing
161.000.000 by 98.800.000 gives 1.63. So 1.63 is the average number of
downloads per flash/shock enabled surfer. These are very rough values as
I'm not considering a lot of situations that are relevant to this
figure.

Nigel

Well,
i was not sure about that so that's why i wanted to test it in that
player.
Till now there seemed to be no export problems.

Thanks all for your help.

James,

You had the right idea.....instead of "I have an action on each of the
button's rollover state to "go to and
stop" on the appropriate frame. "

Use the action "go to and play" it is implemented the same way just click
the box on the bottom right of the pop-up.
