Daniel,

I've had far too much experience in this lately ;-) But I still love Macs.
My G3 was freezing (running OS 8.6) and crashing regularly causing my Flash
files (striking terror in your heart?) to get corrupted. I would save
versions and then have to go back to earlier versions, because whatever
flash file was open would be "history". These were monster files of 30 and
40mb. (swf's are under 1 mg)

End result: My 9gb.hard-drive came up with a flashing question mark (?) and
I had to send it in for repairs. The hard-drive was under warranty, however,
(legal loophole) if I wanted to try reclaiming the data it would void the
warranty!

I sent it to CBL Data Recovery (1.800.551.3917). It was a scary experience.
When the person called and gave me progress reports (hard-drive is a mess,
fragmented, little hope...) I felt like she was the doctor coming out of the
operating room, with surgical gloves and bloody hands, reporting on whether
my data was alive!! They retrieved about 85% of the data, and removed $1600
from my pocket. Although we have a thorough system of back-ups/cd-roms at
our office, this was my home studio computer and it had not been backed up
for 6 months.

Lesson learned: Back-up. Save versions. If your hard-drive is crashing it
may be a warning :-(

I bought a cd writer and a new hard-drive. I tried running OS8.6 but it
crashed too much. I'm now running OS9, and it seems much more stable...but
it's early yet. :-)
