You should only lose everything since you last saved your open documents. First
hold down option & command (the apple) and press escape - that might allow you
to quit the current application. Didn't work? Then hold down control and command
(the apple) and press the triangle start key. Your machine should restart
(reboot). If that didn't work there should be a restart button somewhere on your
Mac.
