Subject: RE: FLASH: OT: client changing site design at will

We regularly suggest a database/asp site with administration screens
that upload to regularly changing areas, such as products, news and press
releases. There is an initial cost, but is an investment as it is scalable
as site grows.

Or, monthly maintainance contract however small.

but clients don't want to buy the software themselves,
they don't want to pay anything to make changes.

If they don't want to pay for changes they don't get changes

If it was a magazine they were producing (you can draw a comparison)
do they find an old copy of quark make changes to layout and then supply
that to the repro house, I think not. And on that subject there is an
imovable deadline when publishing in print, miss that and you miss a booking
on a print press which usually can't be rescheduled as is booked fully.
Would cost you a fortune to re-book and would incure a rush charge etc.
sometimes doubling the cost.

See my point

I have worked as a web designer for around 4 years, previously in
traditional print and television design.

There were defined rules of engagement so to speak. The client had
to move HIS arse as well.

Sorry, for going into one.

Tim
