Yes, I did have contracts, however they do not cover the .fla files,
and as regards being able to update the file to make the situation less
painful, the project is actually a generator template, so that issue is
taken care of.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who answered, as the issue is now
resolved, and having the info on the legal side enabled me to negotiate a
much better deal.
