Franke,
I agree with too much of what you say (and am in too good a mood :) to
argue. Just a couple of comments cuz being me I can't help thinking it's
best to come at things with a dose of realism - I think you'd be hard put to
find anyone who wouldn't want to "earn money while they sleep" and make
things that are popular enough to earn them royalties for easy retirement. I
also think there's a limit to the amount of people that will be able to
manage that - whether it's a lack of talent or a failure to be in the "right
place at the right time" or anything else (not being able to manage the
money/fame even ;)
Also, a nitpick but fine artists may indeed (and mostly do) keep the
copyrights to their work (though you can find people in almost any field
who'll sell them away - hunger is a big motivating factor), but that's not
the same as earning royalties. If it's hanging on someone's wall (assuming
it sold at all), and not being reproduced, there ain't a lot of royalties to
be had - and art reproductions (discounting 'masters' that don't get any
royalties, and primarily science fiction etc. artists (Olivia, Boris,
Frazetta I'm sure earn money for the cards, calendars, posters while they're
asleep as long as they're popular - does anyone still buy the hildebrant
brothers?) - well it's just a fairly limited market.
