Don't feel bad, it's something that happens to all of us at one time or
another. Next time, why not utilise this handy guide to emoticons!

---cut here---

Unlike a conversation, it's sometimes very difficult to tell whether someone
is being sarcastic or attempting to be funny in an email. This can lead to
people becoming upset and wanting to hit you.
As emails tend to be dashed off rather than written carefully (like a
letter) it's often quite useful to add a bit of context.

Thus the smiley, or emoticon was born. Simply append one when the context
isn't clear. I tend to be quite liberal with them. :)

Here's a basic list. You can find more (if you want to) at
http://members.aol.com/bearpage/smileys.htm

:-) Your basic smiley. This smiley is used to inflect a sarcastic or joking
statement since we can't hear voice inflection over e-mail.

;-) Winky smiley. User just made a flirtatious and/or sarcastic remark. More
of a "don't hit me for what I just said" smiley.

:-( Frowning smiley. User did not like that last statement or is upset or
depressed about something.

:-| Indifferent smiley. Better than a :-( but not quite as good as a :-).

:-P nyahhhh!
