Sounds like quite a good idea to me really. Tragic though the loss of a
customer who's trying to shop at a minute past midnight (probably purely
to see if it'll break or not) it's probably in the best interests of the
consumer body as a whole to shut the site down in case anything did go
terrible 'orrible.

(That and all the sysadmins were pissed)
