Re: David Bentley's experience with hardcoded out-of-date data in online
registrations:

My university alma mater just launched an alumni network web site. A good
idea for building a marketing database, and keeping up with old friends. As
part of filling out my professional details, however, I was prompted with
three things:

1. A single line edit field in which I could type my own industry
classification.
2. A hard coded drop down list box in which I could only select my job title
from the list provided.
3. A hard coded drop down list box in which I could only select my employer
from the list of Fortune 200 firms (circa 1975) provided.

Sites like this deserve the poor quality data they collect.

I left the employer field blank and selected the job title of 'investigator'
in the imaginary industry of 'paranormal forensics'.
