As an alternative to Majordomo you could try ezmlm - it's a lot easier to 

configure than Majordomo, and runs a fair few lists for us (maximum about 

5,000 subscribers, but I've seen it run considerably more).  It's Unix 

based, free, but needs Qmail, rather than sendmail, to run.
