Digital Mission Winston Churchill Badge by Sam Michel

Plans are afoot for next year's trip out to South by South West Interactive, and we hope, a Digital Mission that's even better than last year.

Due to factors beyond our control the details are still being confirmed but we wanted to make sure that this trip was on your radar as early as possible.

We're gathering expressions of interest from companies who would like to join the mission using this form, as it's likely to be a fairly quick turnaround when applications open.

Join us for our Christmas Shindig with Digital Mission & Social Media Week

Pueblito Paisa by Luz A. Villa

It’s almost Christmas, and therefore a fantastic excuse for a festive themed Chinwag Shindig.

With Social Media Week London hoving into view in February, we thought it’d be great to bring together the community that we work with, across Chinwag.comChinwag JobsDigital Mission and, of course, Social Media Week.

Nothing too formal, just a friendly knees-up on 8th December, so put the date in your diaries now. We’ll be providing a merry drink or two, so you’ll just need to bring along some festive cheer.

Fighting for (web) Freedom!

Freedom by The unamed

Funnily enough, I was reading the Metro this morning on my way to work and I came across a very interesting article.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the web, has gone on record saying that Facebook, other social networking sites and large corporations are threatening the freedom of the internet.

All The Ladies, Louder Now! #wit11

Ada Lovelace by Andrew Becraft

So, I was supposed to be churning out lengthy documents for Social Media Week London this morning, hence finding procrastinative distractions in the shape of Twitter, when I spotted this from @wendytanwhite:

RT @evarley: Has everyone been nominating great people for @fastcompany's Most Influential Women in Tech 2011? #wit11 http://is.gd/hzNb6

Wendy's made me ponder the number of women working in technology and a problem we've had in the past, finding high-profile women to speak at events and it's not just us, judging by this comment from Wired's Chris Anderson,

There are "not enough high-profile women in the tech industry who are recognizable to sell a cover," he wrote.

I'd thought the situation for women working in digital businesses might be better than other industries, partially because it's newer and (big philosophiocal leap, here) theoretically less affected by older prejudices.

Death of the Social Media Guru

No More Gurus by Ilana Fox

As a result of organisations becoming increasingly aware of the burgeoning power of social media and consequentially seeking to grow their online presence, a new breed of candidate has emerged.

The self-proclaimed ‘social media guru’, but with no bench mark set to aspire to and no qualifications to back up this status, couldn't anyone call themselves a Social Media Guru? And what effect will this have upon the industry as a whole?

Inside Digital Mission NYC

NYC Taxi

The third Digital Mission to New York took place between 1st and 5th November and saw 19 of the UK's leading digital firms tackle the Big Apple.

In amongst the presentations, masterclass and networking events we got to spend time with and get to know the people behind the companies. It's amazing how much you can learn about someone during a taxi ride across New York.

Having many a short converstation, and learning a little about the background of each company only increased our curiousity.  Each story was unique and generally more interesting than what's included in the average company blurb.
